How we review: this assessment is based on the product’s official documentation, current pricing and published independent evaluations; it is not a hands-on test. Read our review methodology.
Runway is best known for generative video, but its product has grown into a broad platform: its own video models, AI editing tools, a library of single-purpose apps, node-based workflows, a conversational agent and real-time video characters. Its research page also shows work on world models, with GWM Worlds 2 released as a research preview on 3 September 2026. This review looks at the creative product as Runway documents it today.
What it is
Runway is a web-based AI video studio, with mobile apps for iOS and Android and a developer platform for API access. Users generate video and images from text, images or existing footage, then edit, restyle and extend the results. Alongside its own models, Runway offers third-party models in the same interface. Our Runway directory entry gives a short overview.
Key features
- Gen-4.5. Runway’s flagship video model, released on 1 December 2025. Runway highlights prompt adherence, physical realism such as weight, momentum and liquids, complex multi-element scenes and a range of styles. It says Gen-4.5 led the Artificial Analysis text-to-video leaderboard at launch; that ranking changes over time.
- Aleph 2.0 and Edit Studio. Edit a single frame of a video and apply the change across the rest of the footage, or change lighting, restyle subjects and add or remove elements with text instructions.
- Runway Agent. Described as a way to “create end-to-end videos with simple conversations”; the pricing page lists an agentic creative collaborator from the Standard plan.
- Workflows. Custom node-based pipelines that chain several models, modalities and steps.
- Apps. Single-purpose tools including Multi-Shot Video, Remove from Video, Reshoot Product, Upscale Video, Add Dialogue, Change Backdrop, Change Time of Day and Relight Scene.
- Characters. Real-time conversational video agents created from a single reference image, introduced in July 2026.
- Integrations. Plugins for Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, and a Runway MCP server that connects Runway to AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT.
- Audio. Paid plans include music, voice and sound effects generation, and custom voice clones from Pro.
Pricing
At the time of writing (October 2026), Runway’s official pricing page lists (US dollars):
| Plan | Price | Credits | Highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 125 one-time | A selection of models, 5 GB storage |
| Standard | $15/month, or $12/month billed annually | 625/month | All video and image models, no watermarks, 4K upscaling, 20 GB storage |
| Pro | $35/month, or $28/month billed annually | 2,250/month | 1 brand kit, 1 voice clone, top-up credits, Runway MCP, 100 GB storage |
| Max | $95/month, or $76/month billed annually | 9,500/month | Early access to new models, HDR and ProRes output, 500 GB storage |
Runway’s FAQ says Standard and Pro credits do not roll over, while Max lets up to one month of unused credits carry forward. Extra credits never expire but have a 1,000-credit minimum purchase. Runway also offers custom Gen-4.5 models for specific uses through its sales team.
Strengths
Breadth is Runway’s main strength. Few competitors combine a top-tier in-house video model with frame-accurate editing, a library of practical apps, chained workflows and an agent in one product. For a creator, that means generating, fixing and finishing a shot without leaving the platform.
Runway is unusually candid about what its model gets wrong. Its Gen-4.5 announcement lists three known failure types: causal reasoning errors, where effects appear before causes; object permanence errors, where objects vanish or appear between frames; and “success bias”, where actions succeed more often than they realistically would. That honesty helps professionals plan where human review is needed. Our explainer on how AI video generators work explains why these errors happen.
Professional integration is strong. The Premiere Pro and After Effects plugins, ProRes and HDR output on Max and the MCP server make Runway easier to slot into existing post-production pipelines.
Limitations
Credits go quickly. Video generation is expensive to compute, and the 625 monthly credits on Standard will not stretch far for anyone generating many clips or iterating on a shot. Serious users will likely need Pro or Max, and unused credits on lower tiers are lost each month.
Generated video still needs supervision. The limitations Runway documents mean outputs can break physical logic or continuity, so longer narratives require selection, editing and sometimes many regenerations, which in turn consumes more credits.
Plan details are uneven. The pricing page does not spell out output resolution per plan or team-seat terms, so buyers with specific delivery requirements should confirm details with Runway. Responsible-use issues also apply: realistic generated footage can be misused, and our guide to deepfakes covers what audiences should watch for.
Who it’s for
- Filmmakers and video editors who want generation and AI editing inside their pipeline.
- Marketing and creative teams producing product shots, social video and concept work.
- Motion designers and VFX artists who need relighting, backdrop changes and object removal.
- Developers building video features on Runway’s platform.
Alternatives
- Synthesia — avatar-led business and training video rather than cinematic generation.
- Descript — transcript-based editing for spoken-word video.
- Adobe Firefly — generative video and imaging tied into Adobe’s apps.
Verdict
Runway earns 4 out of 5. Its documented toolset is among the most complete in AI video, combining the Gen-4.5 model with practical editing, workflows, an agent and professional integrations, and entry pricing is modest. We hold back a point because credit-based pricing limits real output on the lower tiers, unused credits expire on Standard and Pro, and the model limitations Runway itself documents mean generated footage still demands careful review.
